The concept of Chevron was started in the early 1970’s by “The Grandfathers” Milton Levy from Gerard’s Jewellers in Bloemfontein and Charles Kohl from Halko Jeweller, Michael Camberg from Michael Camberg Jewellers and Derrick Carrington from Carrington Jewellers in Germiston.
All of the abovementioned were/are independent Jewellers who foresaw the start of the Chain Groups as a future threat which they thought could be countered by a strong, well organised and committed Independent Retail Jeweller who joined a buying association.
From very small beginnings, the Chevron Group of SA has today grown to 20 members representing 28 stores countrywide, including Namibia.
Initially the Groups finances were controlled by the 3 founding members and out of the office of the chairperson at that stage, but as the Group grew it was necessary not only to rent office space in Johannesburg, but also to employ full time accounting and office staff to handle the workload.
Today Chevron proudly owns its own fully paid up offices in Boksburg and Lynette Schalkwyk and Amanda Oberholzer efficiently run the offices on a day to day basis. The Board of Directors consists of 6 members that meet monthly to view and review matters arising and to decide on the necessary duties to be performed.
